Dentro del programa Explore USA LGBT Edition, la Embajada de los EE.UU. en España dió una beca a un estudiante valenciano, Juan, que se ha incorporado como voluntario en It Gets Better España y nos va a escribir todas las semanas para contarnos su experiencia en Los Ángeles.

¡No quiero irme de Los Angeles!
Aquí el tiempo pasa muy rápido y sólo me quedan dos semanas. ¡Tengo que aprovechar al máximo! Es muy difícil sacar tiempo para escribir estas líneas, esta última semana ha sido realmente intensa…
¡Finalmente fuimos a Disneyland en Orange County! Aquí es donde todo empezó, allá en el año 1955. Hemos visitado los dos parques de atracciones: el original y también el nuevo, que se llama Disney California Adventure. Los espectáculos de cada parque fueron estraordinarios y las atracciones también fueron increíbles, algunas de ellas extremadamente intensas. Ha sido muy emocionante hacer todas estas actividades. Para mí todo es muy auténtico. Se nota que en este lugar puedes sentir la magia de las películas de Walt Disney en cada esquina. El precio pagado por las entradas definitivamente lo valen.
Por otro lado, hemos realizado otras actividades programadas relacionadas con la experiencia LGTB. Hemos conocido a Rebekah Trachsel, la Responsable de Captación de Fondos del Centro LGBT de Los Angeles, que nos hizo un tour por el edificio mientras nos explicaba la historia y los objetivos de su organización. Para mí fue un gran placer conocer a un equipo tan increíble que trabaja por la salud y la igualdad de oportunidades de la comunidad LGTB de esta gran ciudad.
Ese mismo día hicimos una entrevista con nuestro compañero Cesar Concepción Salza, periodista y locutor de Onda Arcoiris, hablando sobre el programa ExploreUSA LGBT Edition y mi beca de la Embajada de los EE.UU. en España.
Además, ayer visitamos los Archivos ONE National Gay & Lesbian en la biblioteca de la Universidad del Sur de California (USC). Estos son los archivos de la historia LGTB más grandes del mundo. Su director, Joseph R. Hawkins, cuenta que la lucha por los derechos LGTB en EE.UU. empezó muchos años antes de lo que se cree, incluso antes de los eventos de Stonewall. Además, él está en contacto con la Federación Española de Lesbianas, Gays, Transexuales y Bisexuales (FELGTB) y está planeando mudarse a Madrid pronto. Nos contó varios hitos interesantes de la historia LGTB y nos mostró documentos y casos reales de donantes que contribuyen para que estos archivos puedan existir.
Este sitio es tan inspirador para mi. Estoy muy contento de haber visitado estos maravillosos archivos. Además he disfrutado mucho aprendiendo de todas estas cosas. Quiero aprovechar para agradecer a Justin Tindall de It Gets Better Project y a Albert Torres de George Washington School of English por hacer posible todas estas actividades. ¡Para mí cada día es una nueva experiencia!

Hey there!
I don’t wanna leave Los Angeles!
Here time goes fast, and there are only two weeks left. Gotta make the most of them! It’s hard to make enough time in order to fulfill these reports. This last week has been really intense…
At last we went to Disneyland, in Orange County! Here is where it all started, back in the year 1955. We visited both parks, the original one, and also at the new one, called Disney California Adventure. The shows performed in each park were outstanding and the rides were awesome too, some of them extremely intense. I was really excited with all the activities. For me everything was so authentic. I can tell that in this place you can sense the magic of Wald Disney movies in every corner. The price paid for our tickets definitely worth it.
On the other hand, we’ve also accomplished other activities related with the LGBT experience part of the program. We met with Rebekah Trachsel, the Major Gifts Associate in Los Angeles LGBT Center, and we did a tour throughout the building as she explained us the history and the main purposes of their organization. For me it was a great pleasure to meet such an amazing team who work pursuing for the health and equal opportunities within the LGBT community in this big city.
Later on that day we took part in an interview with our folk Cesar Concepción Salza, journalist and radio host from Onda Arcoiris and we talked about this program and about my grant from the US Embassy of Madrid.
In addition, yesterday we visited the ONE National Gay & Lesbian Archives at the University of Southern California (USC) Libraries. This is the largest LGBT history record storage in the world. His director, Joseph R. Hawkins claims that the fight for LGBT rights in the USA began many years before it is commonly thought, even earlier than the Stonewall events. Besides, he is in touch with the Spaniard FELGTB and he’s currently planning to move to Madrid soon. He told us about some interesting LGBT history facts and he showed to us documents and real cases from the donators who contributed in order for these records to exist.
This place is so inspiring for me. I’m glad I’ve visited these wonderful archives. On top of that, I enjoyed so much learning from all these things. I really want to thank Justin Tindall from It Gets Better and Albert Torres from George Washington School of English to make all these activities possible. For me every different day is a whole new experience!!
